Tips That Can Save You Some Money

There are many “common sense” things we can all do to save ourselves some money at home. Some of these ideas may take longer to realize a savings … but they will all save you money.

1)     Start switching out your incandescent light bulbs with energy-saving compact fluorescent light bulbs. This alone will save you about $30.00 over its lifetime and will pay for itself in about 6 months.

2)     Turn off the lights in a room when no one is using it … and train the kids to do the same (they learn best by example). This will generate untold savings on your electric bill.

3)     Make sure that your windows and doors are closing properly and that they are weather tight … especially in the cold months when you are using your furnace and in the hot months when you are using your AC … why pay to “heat or cool” the great out-doors … keep that hot or cold air  inside your house … and treat the family to an ice cream cake instead … cause you will easily save that much money.

4)     Check to ensure that your home is properly insulated so that you are not losing furnace heated or AC cooled air.

5)     Set your thermostat at 69 degrees F (or lower) in the cold months … if you feel cold, put on heavier clothes …  and 79 degrees F (or higher) in the hot months … if you feel too warm, put on lighter clothes …. this can save you a bundle of cash on your electric bill.

6)     Keep the heating / cooling unit air filter clean and change it when it’s worn … and if you heat with natural gas for heat shut off the pilot light  in the summer months (when your not using heat.) … This will save you $15 – $20 over the season.

7)     Keep your automobile running smooth;

a)      Keep the engine properly tuned

b)     Change the oil every 5 to 10 thousand miles … your car will run better and the engine will last longer.

c)      Have the exhaust inspected once a year to insure the engine emissions are within manufacturer’s specifications. This will keep your engine running smoother and also cause it to last longer.

d)     Check your tire inflation often to insure the proper tire pressure. This will help to keep your “miles per gallon” up and make your tires last longer

e)     Inspect your tires once-a-month for tread wear. If you see uneven tread wear on a front tires take your vehicle into a shop that can properly balance your tires and correct any misalignment … this will also help to keep your MPG’s up and will save you money on tires and more involved and costly repairs.

This is just a few of the “common sense” things you can do around your home to save some money. If you have some more good ideas, please write them down in a comment and share with everybody … they’ll appreciate your efforts … Thanks
